Concious Sedation

What is Conscious Sedation?

Conscious sedation refers to a combination of medicines that help you relax as well as reduce pain during a dental procedure. Unlike anesthetics used for surgery, you remain awake and completely conscious through the entire process. If you are feeling anxious about a procedure, you can discuss the options for sedation during the procedure with the skilled and experienced dentist.

Nitrous oxide
Nitrous oxide is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen also known as laughing gas. You inhale this mixture of gases during your procedure to achieve the sedative effect. This is a sedation method that has been used for years and has been deemed very safe. It relaxes you to make the procedure less stressful.

Benefits of nitrous oxide

  • Decreases your gagging response
  • Quick onset – within 3 to 5 minutes
  • Dissipates quickly – switch to 100 percent oxygen after the procedure to minimize its effects.

Oral conscious sedation
Oral conscious sedation is another method that we use in the office to help reduce anxiety and relax you for the procedure. This method is stronger and the effects last longer than nitrous oxide. You will need a ride to and from the office when using this form of sedation.
